Cooke Aquaculture Inc. (CAI) is committed to the environment and the actions that have been taken to ensure that we continue to have a sustainable environment in which we can operate. We maintain an Environmental Management System which encourages us to review our performance and make changes to our practices to try and improve our impacts. We also use third-party certification programs to challenge us to go above and beyond our regulatory requirements.
Our Sea Sites, Processing Plants, Feed Mill and Freshwater Hatcheries are Best Aquaculture Practices Certified.
Our products can now carry the 4-Star BAP Certification mark attesting that our salmon meets the BAP standards on four separate links in the chain of production.
What is BAP?
The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification standards were developed in 1997 by the non-profit NGO group the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) to encourage the use of responsible aquaculture practices for a variety of species, including shrimp, tilapia, catfish and most recently salmon.
The BAP Salmon standards are built to specifically address a full range of issues, including environmental and social responsibility, animal health and welfare, food safety and traceability for each phase of the salmon production cycle. The standards promote the responsible use of resources including land, water, nutrients and other resources.
How is Certification Achieved?
To obtain certification our sea sites, processing plants, feed mill and freshwater hatchery are subjected to individual, third-party external audits. The audit process involves a physical inspection of the site or facility, review of documents and records, personnel interviews and results from laboratory analysis. Our external audits are conducted by SAI Global certification body, the largest in the world. SAI Global is accredited to the ISO 65 standard..
What Happens After the Audit?
Continuous improvement. Just because we are certified, doesn’t mean the job is done! Cooke Aquaculture is committed to continuous improvement of quality and environmental performance. Our pristine fresh water and marine environment is our most valuable asset and we continuously strive to protect these and other resources while still delivering superior quality salmon.
